Flaming Jack

OK…so I played with a little fire this week and made these super cute jack-o-lantern garnishes that literally light up the night! An impressive presentation for any fall cocktail, but I added it to a classic Dark and Stormy, made with ginger beer and spiced dark rum. It’s like a rum and coke, but with ginger beer. The added garnish ups the fun factor by 1000. Full transparency though, I’m not a fan of 151 rum, it’s way too strong and tastes terrible in my opinion, but I had to use it to get flames for this fun cocktail. Not to worry though if you’re like me…the best part about this little jack, is that you can remove the garnish with the rum and drink it without the added alcohol. But more than that, if you don’t want to worry about burning your house down, skip the 151 all together and just make a bunch of these adorable jacks to add to an Old Fashioned cocktail, or as a fun twist to a martini or mulled cider. Imagine all the possibilities to garnish all your favorite fall drinks and cocktails. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 mandarin orange
  • 5 oz. ginger beer
  • 2 oz. spiced dark rum (I used Captain Morgan)
  • ½ oz. 151 proof rum
  • ice

Instructions

Jack-o-lantern Garnish

  • Cut out a jack-o-lantern face into an unpeeled mandarin orange using a paring knife.
Cut the orange in half and use the end of a spoon to carefully scrape the orange segments from both halves of the mandarin orange to create two empty orange peel halves.
Trim the sides and top and bottom of the orange peel to create air vents so when they are clam shelled together there is space that allows air to flow between them for the best flame.

Dark and Stormy Halloween Cocktail

  • WARNING: THE FLAME AFFECT IS FOR PRESENTATION PURPOSES ONLY. USE CAUTION WHEN IGNITING THE RUM, AS THE FLAME IS BLUE AND MIGHT NOT BE VISIBLE IF THE LIGHTS ARE ON, SO TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS AND BLOW IT OUT BEFORE DRINKING OR MOVING THE GLASS.
  • Fill glass with ice, 5 oz. ginger beer and 2 oz. dark rum, place half of the orange on top of the ice, fill it with 1/2 oz. 151 rum, and place the jack-o-lantern half over the bottom half. Turn off the lights and light it for an impressive presentation. Blow out flame before drinking.
If you're like me and don't care for the added alcohol of 151 rum, simply remove the garnish and drink it without it. Enjoy responsibly!
