Eat Your Heart Out Cake

By 06/16/2021June 28th, 20216 Comments

It has been said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. I would argue that it’s through his ribcage…just rip it out, nice and quick! (Insert evil laughter) Just kidding of course; no chests were harmed in the making of this gruesome dessert…Just a little role-playing to introduce my next body part recipe for our Dead Man’s Party Halloween theme. Despite the bloody appearance, it’s really a luscious fruit-filled, ultra-decadent red velvet cake bathed in a blood red berry sauce. It’s so delicious that you’ll want to eat to your hearts content. I promise, cross my heart. 🖤 I think the old adage is right about the stomach route afterall…Enjoy!

Equipment

  • Anatomical Heart Mold

Ingredients

Red Velvet Cake

  • 1 box red velvet cake mix
  • 1/2 cup vanilla or cream cheese frosting
  • 1-2 drops purple or black food coloring
  • ½ cup strawberries, cut into small pieces (substitute with your favorite berry)

Berry Blood

  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberry, blackberry, raspberry) (thawed)
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

Red Velvet Cake

  • Prepare cake according to package directions and allow to cool. In a large bowl, crumble half of the cake and add ½ cup of vanilla frosting and mix until incorporated.
For the remaining half of the cake, you can frost and serve as a normal cake or repeat the process to make a second heart cake.
  • Place ~½ cup of the cake/frosting mixture into another small bowl and add a drop or two of purple or black food coloring to darken it slightly. The darker cake mix will be used to make the veins of the heart. Roll small thin tubes of cake/frosting mix and place in the contour of the veins of the heart mold. This is the tedious part, but it's worth the effort to give the heart a realistic look. Refrigerate mold with veins for about 30 minutes to firm up.
  • Remove mold from refrigerator and fill mold with a layer of the lighter cake/frosting mixture, making sure to press the cake into the mold contours and along the sides of the mold. Add a little more cake mixture to the bottom of the mold to prepare it for the fruit filling. Add the fruit filling and then top with more cake mixture until the fruit is enclosed in the cake. Refrigerate for an hour to firm up or overnight. To remove from the mold, place a plate over the mold and invert, and then squeeze and tap the mold until the cake releases. Top with Berry blood sauce and serve.

Berry Blood

  • Add all ingredients to a small saucepan. Smash berries with a potato masher and heat until bubbling and continue to cook for about 5 minutes. If you want smooth sauce (blood look only) with no berries, strain it and discard the fruit. If you want it chunky, do not strain the sauce.
